Class RB and RS – 2016-2017
In Reception we have two special bears that look after us and help us. Billy Bear lives in RB and Charley Bear lives in RS. Each week the child in each class with the most Dojo points gets to take their bear home and record their adventures in a special book.
Every child in Reception has a pirate colour that they collect points for. On Pirate Day we all dress up, have a treasure hunt and play pirate games.
Reception have been exploring Halloween. We have made potions, followed magic spells and children went to a Halloween Disco.
Children in Need
Reception enjoyed raising money for Children in Need today. They wore spotty clothes, brought and bought cakes and decorated the Pudsey Bear with coppers.
Decorating the Christmas Tree
It is our school tradition that Reception bring in baubles from home and decorate the Christmas tree in the hall. We put on some Christmas music and enjoyed dancing while we decorated!
Reception walked to the Town Hall today and got a big surprise! Santa Claus was there in a Christmas grotto! He spoke to all the girls and boys and asked them what would like for Christmas and if they have been good – they all said yes! He also gave all of the children a selection box.
Christmas Craft Morning
This year we invited parents and carers in to make Christmas crafts with their child. Everyone who came enjoyed making angel plates, snowman biscuits, Christmas cups and tree decorations.
All of the Reception staff (and I’m sure parents and carers too) are so proud of all the boys and girls for their effort in our Nativity. The children sang so well and all of the speakers were loud and clear. The children have been working so hard to learn their parts for the last few weeks and all their hard work paid off. Well done!
Sliding in the Rain
There are no January blues in Reception class! Reception made the most of a very rainy day and made a water slide. They put their water suits and wellies on had so much fun on the slide. Some children even tried going down on their tummies and turning as they were sliding.
Storytelling with Adam Bushnell
Reception really enjoyed having Adam Bushnell in to do a storytelling workshop with them today. The workshop was based on Reception’s topic of Castles and Knights. Adam told Reception exciting stories with lots of actions, he had props for them to try on and hold and he helped Reception to make dragon masks. All of the children joined in and it was fantastic to see Adam bring their topic to life.
Chinese New Year
This week Reception have been learning all about Chinese New Year. We have sang a Chinese song to celebrate the new year, read stories about the animals that represent the different years, learnt about how Chinese people celebrate the new year, tried Chinese food, made lanterns, used chopsticks, experimented with noodles and we turned our role play area into a Chinese restaurant. Reception have had a great week learning about another culture and celebration.
As part of our Castles topic, Reception had a banquet this week. We had two queens and two kings and four royal knights to protect them. All of the children looked fantastic in their costumes and party clothes! After we had eaten lots of banquet food, the children provided us all with some excellent entertainment. The knights showed us their best sword fighting, the jesters made us laugh with juggling, the musicians played their own instruments and everyone else enjoyed medieval dancing.
This half term Brendon Renwick is working with Reception every week on a programme called Musical Stories. Each week Mr Renwick tells a story through music, song, actions and lots of exciting props. This week he told The Three Little Pigs and chose children to help him to act out the story and play his instruments.
Today is Shrove Tuesday so Reception have been learning about why we eat pancakes today. The children also helped to make and eat them! The most popular pancake toppings were jam and chocolate spread.
World Book Day
Reception loved dressing up as their favourite book characters and sharing stories with their friends and families. It was lovely to see Reception reading and being read to.
People Who Help Us
This week we had a visit from the Fire Brigade. They brought their fire engine and we got to sit inside it. We were allowed to put on the face mask that they use when they go into a burning building too. We also enjoyed using the fire hose to squirt water. It was very powerful.
This week has been Science Week and the theme of it has been Changes. Reception have really enjoyed taking part in experiments and investigating different changes. We talked about how the seasons change and what we see outside when they change. Reception went outside to make a ‘nature rainbow’ out of different coloured leaves, seeds, twigs etc. Mrs Cox showed Reception how to make a rocket using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. Reception loved making their own and watching them go off into the air. The final investigation we did was with milk, food colouring and soap. Children loved watching the soap react with the milk to mix the colours.
May 2017 – Buddy Time!
As our new starters for September took a tour of the Reception classrooms, Year 6 joined their current buddies out on the yard for some creative fun! Following the discovery and rescue of an injured hedgehog in the Reception outdoor area, we used chalk, sticks, stones and leaves to design and create our very own hedgehogs! Year 6 were fantastic ambassadors for the school and set a wonderful example for their younger counterparts. Take a look at our designs…
