Welcome to Class 5/6 H – Mrs Harvey
Welcome to our Class page. Here you will find important information about our class routines, curriculum and general information. We will also keep you updated about the amazing activities we have been getting up to at school. Please scroll down to keep up to date with our class blog.
Reading books will be changed once a week on a Friday. If children have read the book they will get another. If longer books take a couple of weeks to read, they will get a new book when they need.
Please read regularly with your children at home. Check out www.getepic.com and sign up for free access to an online library of e-books.
Spellings are given on a Monday and are to be learned for a test on the following Monday.
A homework task will be given every Friday. This will alternate between English and Maths and will be returned to the set teacher. Homework should be returned by the folowing Wednesday.
Each term, 5/6 class will take turns to have a term of Transform Fitness on a Friday afternoon. We will try to fit in additional PE lessons wherever possible (weather permitting). This may not necessarily be on the same day each week. Children should bring their full PE kit every Monday and leave it in school throughout the week in case of any extra PE activities.
Please make sure that your child has the correct PE Kit:
-Black shorts, white t-shirt and trainers
-No football or sports tops please!
-Tracksuit bottoms for outdoor lessons.
Earrings and watches should be removed before the lesson. After the initial 6 week period, all earrings must be removed and not covered with plasters. If children cannot remove their own earrings, please remove them before they come to school.
2016 – 2017
May 2017 – Buddy Time!
As our new starters for September took a tour of the Reception classrooms, Year 6 joined their current buddies out on the yard for some creative fun! Following the discovery and rescue of an injured hedgehog in the Reception outdoor area, we used chalk, sticks, stones and leaves to design and create our very own hedgehogs! Year 6 were fantastic ambassadors for the school and set a wonderful example for their younger counterparts. Take a look at our designs…
March 2017 – Science Week!
To kick start Science Week 2017, Mrs Cox has been busy out on the yard with a range of science demonstrations to inspire the pupils. Years 5 and 6 took part in an experiment to see the change and reaction when we mix bicarbonate of soda and vinegar…with explosive results! The children will be completing follow-up work for this in their lessons over the coming week!
March 2017 – India Day!
What a fantastic day Years 5 and 6 had on Thursday with our India Day celebrations. The children were absolutely brilliant and really got stuck into all the different activities. We had a go at some Indian cooking, designed our own henna art, learnt all about Islam and even out together a terrific group dance that we performed for Reception. The staff were very proud of how well the children behaved and the enthusiasm that they showed for all of the different activities. Here are some of the many photos that we took…there will be more to follow in the coming weeks!
During our PE lessons, we have been working with the FISCH team to learn about keeping fit and healthy. This week, we talked about fun physical activities. We played on the dance mats which got our hearts beating! Even Mrs Harvey had a go!
November 2016 – Clay Time!
Class 5/6H had a lot of fun learning about how to use the clay to create their own initial. We were inspired by our work about illuminated letters!
November 2016 – Investigating Illuminated Letters!
Class 5/6H talked about how art can be inspired by nature. We went outside to look for different colours, textures and signs of life. We used these ideas to design our own illuminated letter which we painted with natural dyes including a range of herbs and spices!
November 2016 – Dotty Art!
Class 5/6H looked at examples of art made up of dots! We used the bottom of a paintbrush to create our own dotty masterpieces!
November 2016 – Remembrance Parade
Children in Years 5 and 6 visited the War Memorial in Spennymoor on Friday 11th November to pay their respects. It was a great honour to take the children as they were fantastic ambassadoers for our school. Members of the public commented how nice it was to see the children paying their respects at a community event. Well done Years 5 and 6.
October 2016 – Heart Dissection
Science got very interesting in Years 5 and 6. As part of our topic on ‘The Human Body’, children got the opportunity to dissect a heart and identify the different parts.
All of the children emjoyed the session and we have some budding scientists and possibly surgeons among us! Huge thank you to Mrs Cox, our resident science teacher, for her help!
2015 – 2016
May 2016 – Beamish Stem Project
Elizabeth from Beamish Museum visited our Year 5 Science class. She set the children various challenges using K’Nex to create different shapes and objects. The children worked in groups of six to complete the challenges. At the end of the afternoon after showing some excellent teamwork, Elizabeth left one more final challenge for a group of Year 5 budding scientist and engineers.
The children have to construct a windmill that will lift a 10p coin, it must be bigger than 25cms but no taller than 1m. These child will construct the windmill in the after school Science Club. These lucky children will take their windmill to be judged, by professional engineers, at Beamish Museum as part of their Wind in Sails Project.
11/11/15 – Remembrance Day
The staff were very proud of our year 5 and 6 pupils when they joined the community service of Remembrance on November 11th. They were very respectful. Our year 6 councillors, Grace and Alex, were asked to lay our school wreath.
