Curriculum – Art & Design

Overview and Vision

Intent

Art and Design is an important part of developing children’s ability to develop, share and express their individual creativity and understanding. At Ox Close, we seek to engage, inspire and challenge all children by equipping them with the knowledge and skills to explore, experiment and create their own works of art, craft and design.

At Ox Close, the Art and Design curriculum provides a carefully structured, broad and balanced sequence of learning to ensure progressive development of lasting knowledge and skills is made over the course of children’s time at Ox Close. The curriculum is dynamic and is adjusted in line with the needs and views of learners, with continuous professional development ensuring staff are equipped to deliver an ever-evolving curriculum.

Children are introduced to a range of works by famous artists, designers and craftspeople and they develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used. Opportunities to formulate, discuss and present their views and opinions are embedded within the curriculum – supporting the development of children who are articulate, thoughtful, respectful and well-rounded global citizens. Such opportunities also develop and enhance children’s vocabulary.

At Ox Close, the Art and Design curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop the skills of: drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles, 3D work and digital art, and provides experience of using a range of media and materials. Children are encouraged to be reflective and evaluate their work, thinking about how they can make changes and keep improving, and they are encouraged to take risks and experiment – contributing to the development of a growth mindset, resilience, confidence and self-esteem, all in line with the school’s mantra of ‘Be The Best  You Can Be’.

Art and Design stimulates imagination and creativity; involving children in a range of visual, tactile and sensory experiences, which enable them to communicate what they see, think and feel through the use of the elements of colour, texture, form and pattern.  Furthermore, Art and Design promotes careful observation and an appreciation of the world around us – supporting the development of children’s opinions and respect for the world in which they live.
